The Mach 1 ComethWell, the rumblings and rumors are finally coming to fruition. Ford is indeed going to release the Mach 1. Below are some tidbits about the car. Look for a complete throwdown on this cool new specialty Mustang next month.
* The functional Shaker, modeled after the original '69 Shaker, is mounted to the intake manifold and directs fresh air to the air filter tray assembly.
* The dual 57mm throttle-body feeds air through a cast aluminum intake manifold and into a set of new high-flow four-valve cylinder heads.
* The new cylinder heads house a 5.4L four-valve intake cam and a high-performance exhaust cam. This cam combination greatly enhances torque at lower engine speeds.
* A new set of exhaust manifolds are port-matched to the new cylinder heads.
* The mufflers are tuned to create a unique sound and the tips are chromed, setting the Mach 1 apart from other steeds in the stable.
* The Mach 1 axle has been upgraded with a high torque differential that is coupled to a set of 3.55:1 final drive gears.
Our First Yo Winner!Barbara Alvarez had some advice for her daughter-in-law, Christina. She put a copy of Mustang Monthly, opened to the YO (Young Owners) Club page, and told Christina, "You should send off for this." A few days later, Christina took her mother-in-law's advice and became the first winner in the Mustang Monthly/Mustang & Fords YO Club contest.
Christina, 20, became actively involved with cars after meeting future husband David five years ago. "He had the '75 Mustang and I started going to shows with him. He let me clean up the car and pretty soon I was the only one cleaning it up for him."
The '75 Mustang is still in the family, but it's a project sitting on the back burner now. It has acquired a rebuilt '68 289 Hi-Po engine and there's going to be work done on the body to bring it back to life.
Christina can choose from two daily-driver Mustangs, but she's more likely to be seen in the '97 model. "We acquired it in 1999. We traded in my '84 GT convertible [her first car]. It was just an upgrade to a newer car...I wanted another convertible. We've done modification to this one. The interior has a Hawaiian flair. We've put on clear side marker lights and a new stereo system."
The '99 daily driver is likely David's since he considers the '97 "her" car. The '99 is a Roush Cobra.
When Christina and David got married, there were more than a few car-related items in the wedding gifts. "If Schuck's had had a registry, we would have been on it," Christina said.
A member of Mustangs Northwest, Christina believes young people need to be involved. "I don't want the hobby to die. I think it's important to keep it going. I'll hang around with the older members because it's great to hear the stories. Everyone has a Mustang story."
In addition to her club activities Christina and David assist in an annual rod show with the DARE organization. This year's event will be held on August 11 in Kenmore.
Laurel Mountain Mustang will award Christina a $500 gift certificate (which she plans to use on the '97 Mustang).
